Lonnie Wilson, Ken Scott the son of sharecropper Zuba Wilson Douglas Fowley, returns to Clinton, Louisiana after six years on a chain gang for killing Davey, the son of Col. Ben Marquand Raymond Burr in an automobile accident. He rekindles a long-buried romance with Melinda Marquand Martha Hyer, who had married Dr. Ned Thomas Brett Halsey while Lonnie was away, a fallout from the very accident that he himself faced.

The town’s shadows loom large as Lonnie needles Ned about his wife’s infidelity, a claim Ned confirms when he catches Lonnie and Melinda embracing in Col. Marquand’s hunting lodge. Melinda, seeking an explanation and hoping to preserve her innocence, shoots Lonnie and wounds him, insisting she was not to blame and that she was being raped.

Col. Marquand, who had paid Lonnie to shoulder the blame for his daughter, leverages her story to maneuver Sheriff Wheaton into taking action against Lonnie. Mrs. Marquand must face the fallout of Davey’s death and comes to realize that she witnessed Melinda run down her own little brother, a revelation that casts a painful echo through the family’s fortunes.

Peter Marquand and Ned return to the lodge and inform Otis that the charges against Lonnie are built on lies. With the truth emerging, Lonnie is exonerated, and he returns the favor to Zuba by handing over the deed to the farm. In a quiet moment of relief, Zuba dances with joy, finally owning the land he toiled for his entire life, a testament to perseverance and the fragile turn of fate in a small southern town.
