Alex Pearson is a talented but self-centered high school hockey player at Lemon Oaks High School who chases the attention of the popular senior Matisse Burrows and even dreams of getting his own car. His widowed father, Jasper Pearson, won’t foot the bill for his vanity, reminding him that his attitude needs to improve after a recent suspension for showboating on the ice. To prove he can be responsible, Alex takes on chores and babysits his little sister, Emily Pearson, all while navigating a family dynamic that tests his patience and his resolve.

Meanwhile, Emily’s Bumble Bee troop faces an existential threat: their leader has just left for a new job elsewhere, leaving the troop worried it might be dissolved. Seizing the chance to prove himself useful, Alex volunteers to serve as the substitute Den Mother, adopting the alias “Mrs. Zamboni” to avoid tipping off parents and the Bumble Bee council while he learns the ropes.

The troop must work hard to reach Camporee, the year’s pinnacle event, by selling cookies and earning badges. In the process, the girls help Alex become more likable and, in return, help him win a date with Matisse Burrows, turning his quest for romance into a genuine chance to connect with someone he admires.

As Alex steps up for the Den Mothers and stands up to Dina Reams, the strict Den Mother who tries to keep him out, his resolve is tested. The big test comes during a muffin sale at a major hockey game when his disguise almost backfires and the coach notices his absence once his suspension is supposed to be over. Still playing as Mrs. Zamboni, Alex steps into the game, but the gambit backfires in ways he did not anticipate: the Bumble Bee troop is disqualified, his best friend grows distant, and his sister and father feel let down by his reckless choices.

A revelation shifts the compass of the story when Alex visits neighbor Allie Jacklitz, who used to lead a Bumble Bee troop and who reveals that his late mother had been part of her old group. Motivated by this connection, Alex makes a deal: he will pitch in around the house if Allie agrees to become the new Den Mother. With Allie’s guidance, she brings forgiveness to the troop, and Alex earns a chance to finish the hockey season on a high note. He apologizes to his teammates and, in a pivotal moment, offers the captaincy to his friend, Danny “Goose” Gustavo; Goose declines, saying he would rather see Alex lead the team, which underscores the trust that has begun to form between them. In the ensuing game, Alex intentionally backs off the puck to create space for Goose, allowing him to score the winning point and secure an All-Star opportunity for Goose.

The Bumble Bees arrive at the arena with Alex’s father, and Matisse forgives him while signaling that she’d like him to remain as their Den Mother, a role he comes to accept. At Camporee, Alex formally steps into the Den Mother role, even as Dina challenges him and urges him to quit, insisting that Den Mothers must wear a Bumble Bee uniform. Rather than bow out, he dons the uniform to demonstrate his commitment, and Dina’s husband—the same hockey official who initially suspended him—takes a measured view of Alex’s attitude and offers him a spot on the All-Stars. Alex accepts, provided the schedule can accommodate the troop’s commitments, marking a new balance between his hockey ambitions and his family and community responsibilities.
