Recorded live over three nights from 15–17 August 1972 at Osaka’s Festival Hall and Tokyo’s Budokan, the album captures Deep Purple’s performance, featuring four tracks from that year’s Machine Head. Initially regarded as minor by the band, only Roger Glover and Ian Paice mixed it. Its U.S. release was delayed until April 1973 as Warner Bros. prioritized Who Do We Think We Are. The concerts were later issued in the 1993 Live in Japan 3‑CD set, noted for containing no overdubs or studio additions.
