Stephanie Aggiston, a teenage girl from the countryside, is sent to Starkwater Hall Boarding School for the summer to brush up on advanced French. The institution is portrayed as a prestigious private girls’ academy, and Stephanie, with her country roots, finds the environment to be a little snobbish and intimidating. She keeps her eyes open for friendship and soon discovers kindred spirits in a small circle of fellow students: Marita Armstrong, Calli, and Shama, who is a Saudi princess and her roommate. The initial days are a mix of new routines, social dynamics, and the quiet tension that often accompanies a school with such a polished outward appearance.
As the days unfold, a shadowy threat begins to loom: murders start to occur among the students, casting fear over the hallways and classrooms. A detective named Det. Russ Kemper arrives to investigate the killings, and the campus becomes a tighter, more anxious place as the body count rises. The mystery deepens with every new death, and the girls are left wondering who will be next. In the midst of this turmoil, Stephanie takes matters into her own hands, determined to uncover the truth that the adults seem slow to reveal. She becomes entangled in the investigation and seeks help from the school’s social circle, notably by befriending a new, attractive stable boy, Eddie Fox, who earns her trust because he sees beyond the outward appearances of the other girls. His affection for her is framed as being inspired by her independence and unwillingness to conform to the expected norms of the school. > not being like the other girls
The summer intensifies, and the threat forces a gradual evacuation of the students from Starkwater Hall. In a pivotal and chilling turn, Marita Armstrong is kidnapped on the day she is slated to depart, taken by the school janitor, Robert Hartigan. He confines and gags Marita in his quarters, misled by a dangerous, twisted belief about his own family history. Marita uses a signal for help, and Stephanie, with Det. Kemper in close pursuit, makes a bold move: she heads out “alone” to draw the kidnapper’s attention, providing the detective with the opening needed to intervene and save Marita.
The tension peaks when Stephanie is suddenly ambushed and chased by a shadowy figure dressed in black. The silhouette is eventually identified as Kemper himself, the very detective who was supposed to bring the killer to justice. The narrative reveals that the first death, Tember Logan, was an accident—a drowning that seeds the killer’s resolve. From there, Kemper crafts a vendetta against the school and Miss Wade, who is revealed to be his mother, for abandoning him. His murderous spree evolves as a means to ruin the reputations of both the school and Miss Wade, a calculated act of revenge that ultimately backfires. In a climactic confrontation, Kemper is apprehended and removed from the campus, leaving the surviving students to pick up the pieces of their disrupted lives and to reflect on the eerie truths the summer uncovered.
