At a remote logging camp, a supervisor pushes to reach the crew before the weekend, but when the radio goes quiet, he drives out to the site and discovers a severed arm and something unsettling among the trees. After retreating to his car, a prowling creature closes in and kills him, leaving a chilling first clue about the danger creeping through the woods.

Ninety miles north, in Maiden Woods, Farmer Ron reports one of his horses missing, though there’s no obvious motive or evidence of theft. Sheriff Paul Shields and his deputy Donny chalk it up to a gate left open and an animal wandering off, but the strange events soon multiply. That night, Paul’s son Adam glimpses something outside their window, and Adam hints at someone named Tim that isn’t present in their life anymore. The next morning, footprints appear in the snow around various homes—hooved tracks that somehow travel on two legs and disappear into the woods. The prints are accompanied by a spate of animal disappearances, and Ron’s daughter along with several hunters voice age‑old fears about beings that might inhabit the forest, while Paul remains skeptical, suggesting it could be a prank.

A key development occurs when Paul and Adam witness a creature near their yard, an encounter punctuated by the discovery of a bridle dangling from a tree—the same bridle from Ron’s missing horse. The next day, Paul and Donny notice a flock of birds migrating south when they should be heading north, a sign that something is seriously off. That night, Paul is summoned to Ron’s farm, where the creature tries to slip into the stables before slipping away again. A dead deer found on the road is mauled, and the creature appears to snatch it before Paul can intervene, adding to the growing sense of an apex predator in the area.

Susan, Paul’s wife, reveals to Donny that their second son, Tim, died in a freak accident while Paul was supervising him, a memory that haunts the family and colors Paul’s sense of responsibility. As fear spreads through the town, residents become more vocal about the threat, and even James, a local neighbor, taunts Paul about his perceived failures in protective duties. Paul occasionally experiences visions of Tim, a personal tie that fuels his investigation.

The danger intensifies when three hunters are attacked in the woods. One survivor can’t provide a clear description, while the other two bodies are found mangled high in the trees. In response, Paul temporarily bans hunting and orders everyone to stay indoors at night as park rangers are brought in to hunt the creature. A blizzard traps the town in its grip, and fear grows as more people evacuate. A hunter shares game camera footage showing a creature walking on two legs, reinforcing the sense that a nonhuman predator has claimed the forest.

As the storm rages, the creature breaches Paul’s home and forces a tense standoff in the living room. Paul and Donny manage to drive the intruder back by barricading inside the basement and later confronting the threat upstairs in the church when the town gathers there for safety. Donny shoots at the creature in the kitchen and is wounded, while the creature escapes. Paul tracks it to the church and, after a struggle, finally kills one of the attackers with a knife, bringing a grim sense of closure to that moment of danger.

With the immediate threat apparently diminished, Paul returns to the basement to report that the creature is dead. Yet Donny notices that the wound on the corpse—shot through the shoulder—has vanished, hinting at a more troubling truth: there are multiple creatures inhabiting the church, or perhaps the town’s church is a focal point for a broader infestation. Outside, a chorus of creatures swarms across the roof, leaving the community to confront a reality far more extensive than a single predator.
