Gencho Gunchev, born with the plain name Gencho Gunchev and the restless soul of an adventurer, cannot settle for the dull routine of a clerk. With a natural charm, he pursues relationships with wealthy women, only to vanish with their money once the trust is secured. Posing as the celebrated freelance architect Yastrebovski, he milks a group of naive people, pulling off a sizable swindle that is finally exposed in a dim, crowded bar where the spoils are squandered in a careless spree.
Despite his long history of run-ins with the authorities, he manages to evoke a surprising measure of sympathy from the man in charge, Police inspector Peshanov. The con man plays the game of illness and deceit, faking a hospital stay and, within those sterile walls, forging a death certificate. With that false demise, he slips away and travels to Bourgas in search of his next mark. There, in the company of a bright, thoughtful teacher, Boryana, he finds a rare connection and even begins to fall in love. Yet the weight of his own deception looms, and when the danger of capture grows, he recoils, leaving behind only a photograph of the woman he has come to care for.
Back in Sofia, fate seems to tilt in his favor once more, as he covertly borrows a police captain’s uniform and moves through the city with renewed bravado. In this shadowed chapter, he encounters a man named Sedlarov, who operates an illegal workshop within his own home. Gunchev accepts a bribe from Sedlarov and, true to his opportunistic nature, proposes marriage to Sedlarov’s daughter, Sevelina. Under the alias Iliya Burevestnikov, he expands his blackmail to the entire network of private contractors in the area, even crossing paths with one of his former wives along the way.
As the intricate web begins to unravel, his true identity is finally laid bare, and he tumbles back into custody. Yet, before surrendering to the inevitable, the only request he makes of the inspecting team is to see a particular photograph—the image of Boryana, the woman who briefly reminded him of a different, human possibility.
