In Kamakura, Yagi, a university professor, and his wife Namiko, a former ballet dancer who now runs a ballet school, share an unhappy marriage while raising their children, Shinako and Takao. Namiko projects her own unfulfilled dreams of a dance career onto Shinako, who is part of a ballet ensemble, deepening the strain between husband and wife. Takehara, a lifelong friend who has long harbored feelings for Namiko, presses her to leave Yagi behind, seeking a chance at happiness with someone new.

When Namiko learns from Takao that Yagi has quietly saved money during years of hardship, she is confronted with a difficult choice: stay in a loveless marriage or walk away with Takehara. The family’s tensions rise as Shinako, accompanied by her ensemble colleague Nozu, visits her former ballet teacher Kayama at his sickbed. Before he dies, Kayama urges the young dancer to persevere: > “Dance as long as you’ve got legs.”

This moment strengthens Shinako’s resolve not to surrender her dream of becoming a professional dancer, even as romance and loyalty pull in different directions; she rejects Nozu’s proposal, choosing to dedicate herself to her art rather than starting a new life with him. Meanwhile, Namiko experiences a pivotal moment watching her daughter perform in a staging of Swan Lake. The performance solidifies her commitment to the family she has built and leads her to decline Takehara’s invitation to travel to Kansai, returning to Yagi to continue their life together.
