Daayen Ya Baayen 2010

Ramesh Majita, Deepak Dobriyal, returns from Mumbai to his hometown of Kanda in Uttarakhand, stepping back into a life shaped by modest means. He lives with his mother Dhanuli Devi, his wife Bharti Bhatt, their son Pratyush Sharma who plays Baju, and his sister-in-law Aarti Dhami. The family struggles on a tight budget, while Ramesh works as a school teacher in a building plagued by mice, a detail that underscores the everyday challenges of village life. Yet he remains hopeful about bringing something positive—like education and a sense of progress—to the community he calls home.

To widen opportunities for the villagers, he canvasses the community to build a Kala Kendra, a project that stands as a beacon of culture and learning. His friend Basant, Badrul Islam, enters Ramesh’s name in a village draw to win a car, a prize that would change the balance of status in the area.

To everyone’s surprise, Basant wins the car—the first and only one in the entire village—stoking tension with the local contractor Jwar Singh Jeetendra Bisht. Ramesh quickly learns how to drive, but the car soon shows its flaws: it needs maintenance, and a mechanic must be brought in from outside the town. He also discovers that Basant borrowed money to cover the car’s repairs, pushing Jwar to test Ramesh’s loyalty by asking him to drive the car in a race to settle the debt. Ramesh agrees, but changes his mind at the last moment, choosing not to race.

As the situation escalates, Jwar’s goons seize the car to cover losses, and Sundar, Manav Kaul, joins Basant in helping Ramesh track down the vehicle. After a tense search, the car is stolen, and Jwar Singh accuses Ramesh of stealing, demanding repayment of the debt. With the car missing from his property and the village’s eyes turning toward him, Ramesh faces a difficult question about who might hold the truth, and what really happened to the vehicle that once symbolized a rare gleam of prosperity.
