Curiosa presents a visually polished façade that fails to sustain narrative cohesion or emotional resonance, resulting in a largely unsatisfying experience. Critics commend the production design and occasional cinematographic flair, yet the direction, pacing, and screenplay are widely regarded as disjointed and pretentious. Performances, especially by the lead, receive mixed reactions, further diluting audience investment. Consequently, the film struggles to engage viewers beyond momentary erotic curiosity.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Curiosa
Art & Craft
In terms of art and craft, the film excels in set design, costumes, and occasional striking cinematography. Reviewers note the polished production values and compelling visual composition, particularly the use of reflections. However, criticism targets uneven editing, abrupt scene transitions, and a pacing that feels overly deliberate. The net impression is a well‑finished visual package marred by inconsistent directorial choices.
Character & Emotion
When evaluating character and emotion, performances are polarised. Some critics highlight Noémie Merlant’s compelling presence, while many users describe the acting as forced, unintentionally comedic, and lacking depth. Character motivations are frequently called inconsistent, and emotional stakes feel under‑developed. Overall, the film offers limited character nuance, resulting in a weak emotional connection for the audience.
Story & Flow
The story and flow of Curiosa are widely criticised for incoherence and sluggish pacing. Reviewers describe the narrative as an exposition‑heavy, repetitive dump with unresolved plot lines and a confusing climax. Although a few note an intriguing premise, the screenplay’s lazy construction and lack of clear direction dominate the assessment, leaving the story feeling unfinished and unsatisfying.
Sensory Experience
Sensory experience receives mixed feedback. Visual style, including the photography and period costumes, is praised for its elegance and occasional erotic allure. Conversely, the soundtrack divides opinion: some applaud its cool, modern edge, while many condemn it as mismatched and poorly composed for the period. The overall sensory impact is aesthetically appealing but unevenly supported by audio design.
Rewatch Factor
Rewatch factor is generally low, as viewers report boredom, lack of narrative payoff, and a sense of wasted time. While a minority enjoy the erotic set pieces and visual polish, the film’s slow pace, pretentious tone, and weak storytelling diminish its replay value. Consequently, the film offers limited incentive for repeated viewings.

Set in France around the turn of the 20th century, the film traces the intertwined life of Marie de Regnier, a respected writer who published her first book under a male pen name, and the two men who fall for her: Pierre Louÿs and Henri de Régnier. Marie, the daughter of a celebrated poet, marries the wealthy Henri to help pay off her father’s debts and to improve her social standing within a rigid bourgeois world.
Pierre flees to Algeria, where he meets Zohra, a beguiling woman who ignites a new passion. Returning to France, he brings Zohra with him, and Marie becomes his mistress. She and Zohra engage in provocative, boundary-pushing games with Pierre, posing nude for him and testing the limits of the bourgeois norms they inhabit. Together they push at the boundaries of their society, and Marie begins to invent stories designed to inflame Pierre’s erotic imagination.
Through these stories, Marie gains a certain power over Pierre and discovers her sexuality and her literary voice. When Pierre travels again, Marie feels a terrible emptiness and learns that she is pregnant, marking a turn in her personal journey and in the dynamics of their relationships. The film delves into desire, art, and the emergence of a woman’s voice within a rigid social order.
