Pamela, a seven-year-old girl and horror film fan, is taken by her parents, Nuria and Bernardo, to her family’s cabin in the woods to celebrate her eighth birthday. Her paternal uncle, Esteban, joins them as well. Once there, Pam encounters Esteban’s gift: a jester puppet named Hellequin, who, according to her uncle, is modeled on a real jester who was hanged when he failed to amuse his king.

That night, Nuria and Esteban—who are secretly involved—meet in the shack’s shed to carry out a plan. They intend to kill Bernardo and make it look like an accident. Meanwhile, Pam is awakened by Hellequin, who uses puppets to reveal her uncle and mother’s secret affair, along with their scheme to murder her father. Pam tries to warn her family, but Hellequin stops her, threatening to take their souls to hell if she speaks up.

Following Nuria and Esteban’s plan, the family throws a private party for Pam. She attempts to warn everyone through a puppet play that mirrors a king betrayed by his wife, and she sings songs that hint at the dangerous plots in motion. Hellequin then reveals to Pam that her parents are not truly aligned with Esteban’s plan; they have their own scheme to kill Esteban in the toolshed. As Esteban grows anxious about the success of his plan, he uncovers a book that suggests part of Hellequin’s backstory might be true—the doll’s soul may be trapped there by a wizard.

On the last day of the weekend, Esteban and Bernardo prepare to kill one another. Esteban seems to kill Bernardo by striking him in the head with a pole. Yet when he and Nuria go to the shed, they are met by Bernardo, who had protected himself with a hidden helmet. Bernardo then tries to shoot Esteban, but Nuria interferes by disassembling the ammunition, forcing the two brothers to face each other with an axe and a rake in a brutal clash. In the end, Bernardo kills Esteban with a rake. He then turns his aggression toward Nuria and gives chase through the woods, but Nuria outwits him when he stumbles into a bear trap and is beaten to death with the shotgun by his wife. Pam, guided by Hellequin’s puppets, understands what has happened.

Days later, Nuria inherits the family business from her husband and brother-in-law, as planned. In a final act of revenge, Pam brings Nuria to fall from the stairs, exacting her final vengeance.
