Jack Simpson is a quick-witted, directionless layabout who works at an inner-city telemarketing firm. For years he has clung to three Cityside Lawn Bowls Club memberships, not to play, but to snag the free parking spaces he rents out to coworkers, a small hustle that funds his easygoing lifestyle. When a ruthless developer, Bernie Fowler, sets sights on turning Cityside into a pokies venue, the club’s future is cast into doubt. The Club President, Len Johnson, imposes a harsh new rule: every existing member must actually play, forcing Jack to show up on Saturdays and participate in the matches. He proves to be a natural, delivering sharp, precise shots, but his brash style and blunt manner soon grate on the older players. Seeing a spark beneath the surface, veteran player Stan Coombs steps in as a mentor, offering guidance on the game and on life, teaching Jack to consider others before himself.
After a personal setback—losing his girlfriend and his job—the Bowls Club becomes all that Jack has left, and he starts forming real affection for the club’s aging members. His flatmate, Dave Jackson, joins the club and he begins a relationship with journalist Nancy Brown, who watches the unfolding story with growing sympathy for the misfit team. Bernie’s relentless push to seize control leads him to dig into Jack’s past and expose an illegal car-park-hiring scam, a revelation that nearly gets Jack expelled. Cityside presses on, entering a major tournament at Bernie’s glittering club, with the prize money seen as the key to preserving the club’s independence. Jack’s showy play nearly derails them in the opening rounds, but Stan and the others steer him toward teamwork and a sense of belonging.
Things grow darker when the police arrive to arrest Len after a tip from Bernie uncovers marijuana stored at the club. It turns out the greenkeeper has been secretly growing it, yet Jack bears the brunt of blame from the other members while the real culprits are left unpunished. In a bid to save the club’s future, Gwen and Eileen rally support; with the help of Dave Jackson and Nancy, they persuade the State Governor to overturn a lifetime ban on Cliff Carew, the club’s best player, who steps into Len’s place. Cityside fights back with renewed vigor, pushing into the lead as Stan delivers the winning shot, only to collapse from a heart attack just as the victory seems secured. Bernie protests, and the shot is disallowed, leaving Jack to insist that the rules allow a re-shot. He unveils his signature move, the Flipper, and uses it to clinch the tournament victory. In a final sting, Nancy reveals Bernie’s violation of a restraining order, an illegal act that also disqualifies him from holding a gaming licence.
Cityside’s day of triumph is tempered by loss: the club survives in its traditional form, but Stan passes away, and the green is named in his honour. The discredited greenkeeper is dismissed, and Jack takes over his duties, finding comfort in Len’s quiet affirmation that Stan loved him like a son. With Nancy by his side, he begins a new life alongside their friends at the club. The film closes with end-credit stills and a narration by Jack, recounting the later exploits of all the characters and the lasting sense of community that the old greens brought to Cityside.
