In the quirky, sunlit world of Fort Chicken, Illinois, a bizarre outbreak begins with a chicken infected by a mutant virus that ends up as tainted nuggets. Those nuggets—presented as a harmless treat—find their way into the hands of unsuspecting kids, and one fourth-grader, Shelly Linker, becomes the first obvious vessel for the infection after sampling a black-dotted bite. The story follows this strange pathogen as it threads its way through the town’s school system, starting with Fort Chicken Elementary, where an aspiring horror writer, Clint Hadson, is asked to substitute for a day and to reconnect with his high school crush, Lucy McCormick, who is already dating the gym teacher, Wade Johnson.
