Pandit Jai Kishen brings a prospective groom’s family to Sarah Rozario. But when her father Jeffrey Rozario learns that the family isn’t filthy rich, he insults [Pandit Jai Kishen]. This bold gesture sets Jai Kishen on a mission to teach Jeffrey a hard, humbling lesson about arrogance and pride.

On the way home, a railway station porter named Raju, proudly known to his colleagues as “Coolie No. 1,” catches Jai Kishen’s eye. Raju is celebrated among porters for his courage, having recently helped arrest a drug dealer named Mahesh. When Raju is smitten by Sarah’s photo, Jai Kishen crafts a plan to marry the porter to Sarah and settle his score, enlisting the aid of his friend Deepak. With Jai Kishen’s scheming and Deepak’s support, Raju poses as the prince of Singapore, Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh, and wins Sarah’s heart, while Sarah’s sister Anju falls for Deepak.

Jeffrey learns of the union and pushes ahead, arranging for Sarah to marry Raju — unaware that her new husband is actually a poor railway porter. When Raju returns home after the wedding, he pretends that his “father,” Mahendra Pratap Singh, has thrown him out for marrying without consent. Sarah tries to make the best of the situation by cheering up Raju, which only deepens his guilt as the truth edges closer to revelation.

The trouble snowballs when Jeffrey comes to town and spots the new son-in-law at the train station, instantly accusing him of fraud. Raju, playing along, pretends not to recognize Jeffrey and explains that he must have seen his twin brother Raj — a story Jeffrey eagerly accepts, and he resolves to have Anju married off to Raju as well so both daughters can live in luxury.

Raju’s predicament intensifies because he can’t be in two places at once. When a missing-person report for Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh triggers Inspector Jagjit Godbole’s (Johnny Lever) skepticism, Deepak suggests a drastic plan to “kill” Raju. In a daring move, Raju tosses his [Coolie No. 1] badge into a car that Deepak and he push off a cliff into a lake. The car is recovered, but no body is found, and the inspector’s suspicions are temporarily eased.

The plot thickens when Mahesh Anand Pratap Singh stabs Mahendra Pratap Singh and frames Raju for the crime. Inspector Godbole arrives to arrest him, only for Raju to reveal that Mahendra is alive and needs urgent medical care. The two hatch a plan to pose as nurses to save Mahendra’s life, which becomes Raju’s key to proving his innocence. At the hospital, Inspector Godbole tells Jeffrey, Sarah, and Anju that Raju is merely a porter who posed as Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh.

As luck and sincerity collide, Raju and Deepak cross paths with Sarah and Anju again. Raju finally confesses the fraud, and Sarah forgives him. Jeffrey and Sarah rally to help Raju and Deepak stop Mahesh from harming Mahendra. Once Mahendra regains consciousness, he declares that Raju has saved his life and that, in his eyes, Raju is like a son. Anju also proclaims her love for Deepak. When Jai Kishen confronts Jeffrey about wealth and pride, he reminds him that a happy marriage rests on love, not riches.
