Convoy Buddies 1975

Having stolen a piece of meat, hungry small-time crooks Antonio Cantafora and Paul L. Smith are running through the streets of an Italian city. With no money in their pockets, they spot a sign for an Employment office, truck drivers section, enter, and are noticed by a shifty man who offers them cash to drive a truck to Marseille, supposedly loaded with insecticide. The setup is crude, yet the risk feels real, and the promise of quick cash tempts them into a decision that will pull them into a much larger web of danger.

Carelessly driving the truck out of the warehouse, they crush several wooden crates in the load, causing one to spill out a gun. The moment is chaotic and slapstick in tone, highlighting their lack of preparation as they shoulder the weight of a potentially deadly cargo. On the road, they engage in an extended, high-spirited argument with other drivers of the same type of truck. The two trucks butt heads, bumping off the road and then rejoining the chase, all while they squeeze a small passenger car between them, turning a simple delivery into a tense, uneasy game of brinkmanship on wheels.

As they approach the French border, they narrowly avoid detection when a customs agent spots one of the spilled guns. The tension in the cab rises as the reality of their decision sinks in, yet they press on, their misadventure compounding with every mile. On the road, the gunrunners who hired them continue to monitor the truck’s location by radio, intensifying the sense that escape isn’t a simple option. The environment grows direr as the drivers toy with the gun inside the cab, stopping to play along the roadside and resume their dangerous “gun games,” eventually shooting a hole through one of their own tires and losing a bit of control in the process.

The situation grows more precarious when the four gunrunning henchmen, led by Dominic Barto as Lucky, close in to take the truck. A roadblock is set up to seize the vehicle, heightening the clash between the robbers and the gunrunners. Yet the two crooks—who started this entire trip with nothing—drive through the blockade, proving their nerve and willingness to take enormous risks in pursuit of a payday. The sequence underscores a tense dynamic of pursuit and evasion, where quick thinking and reckless bravado push the protagonists toward an uncertain destination.
