Coming Home for Christmas 2013

Two sisters, Kate Carly McKillip and Melanie Britt McKillip, grow up in a close-knit family, each shaping a very different life. Their bond is deeply tested when Kate walks out on Melanie’s wedding, convinced the man Melanie is marrying doesn’t truly care about her sister.

Five years later, Kate has become a jaded editor at a publishing house, chasing her “dream job,” while Melanie lives in a big house she maintains to project a glamorous life as a pampered wife. Their parents have lost their home to financial trouble and move into a townhouse, where their mom, Wendy Amy Jo Johnson, helps make ends meet by running a preschool. Wendy’s struggles deepen into depression, further fraying the family’s sense of closeness and prompting a separation from Kate and Melanie’s father.

Kate, driven by her parents’ split, returns to the old family house only to be caught trespassing by the new owner, Mike Benjamin Hollingsworth, a handsome war veteran who has moved to town to open a woodworking shop. Mike’s presence introduces a new energy into the town, and he has taken under his wing the son of one of his late war buddies, Ryan, who helps out in the shop.

Determined to mend what has been broken, Kate enlists Melanie in a plan to reunite the family for Christmas, hoping they can share a real, honest celebration for the first time since Kate walked away on Melanie’s wedding day. The sisters begin to rebuild their bond, and Kate’s renewed connection with Mike begins to complicate the family dynamic in quietly hopeful ways.

The Christmas gathering at Mike’s house brings a nostalgic warmth, but it is tempered by lingering tensions. Melanie accuses Mike of not truly loving Kate after witnessing a tender moment between Mike and his old buddy’s wife when she came to pick up her son, casting doubt on Kate’s judgment about the relationship. Kate questions her instincts about the family’s inherent dysfunction and seeks forgiveness from her sister, while also asking Mike to share his side of the story.

After some difficult conversations and reconciliations, the family returns to the old house to finish celebrating together. The evening culminates with Kate leading Mike outside to the mistletoe for a first kiss, signaling a renewed spark and a hopeful path forward for their fractured family.
