Lars, Philip, and Jozef are three close friends in their twenties, each living with significant physical disabilities. Despite their challenges, they dream of experiencing new things and gaining independence. Jozef (tom-audenaert) is nearly blind, able to read only with a magnifying glass up close, which makes navigating the world a constant hurdle. Philip (karel-vingerhoets), who is unable to walk due to a spinal cord injury, has limited use of his arms and hands; he operates his wheelchair with only one hand and relies on a mouth-held device for typing. Meanwhile, Lars (gilles-de-schryver), suffering from a terminal brain tumor, is increasingly paralyzed and uses a wheelchair, battling both physical decline and strokes.
Despite their physical limitations, these friends share a strong desire to break free from their routines and experience intimacy, especially their plan to visit a Spanish brothel that caters specifically to disabled clients. To outsiders, their trip is disguised as a visit to the vineyards of Bordeaux, as their parents prefer to keep their true intentions private. Initially, their parents are somewhat supportive, but things take a dramatic turn when Lars receives the devastating news that he has an aggressive form of cancer. His doctor forbids him from traveling, and their parents are hesitant to let them go on such a risky journey. Nevertheless, the friends are determined not to give up on their dreams, unofficially deciding to go ahead, regardless of their families’ objections.
The young men plan an adventurous expedition across France to reach Spain, enlisting the help of a young woman named Claude (isabelle-de-hertogh) who is initially seen as their nurse and driver. Their journey is filled with logistical challenges, disagreements, and moments of tension, especially since they are totally dependent on their parents’ oversight. Claude proves to be capable and committed but surprises them all when they discover she is a woman and that she only speaks French, which adds a layer of complexity to their interactions. At first, Lars and Philip find her unattractive—partly because of her weight—and perceive her as stiff and distant. They also assume she is stingy because she demands a substantial daily allowance yet prefers to picnic instead of eating in restaurants, which they view as frugal.
Over time, however, their perceptions start to shift as they see Claude’s true qualities. She demonstrates her dedication and quick thinking by saving Jozef when he accidentally falls overboard during their trip. They also observe her defending Lars against a man who tries to confront him, revealing her loyalty and strength. Philip, who initially disliked her most, begins to appreciate her resilience and the depth of her character. Their journey becomes not just about fulfilling their personal ambitions but also about forging unexpected bonds and challenging stereotypes about disability, independence, and friendship.
Throughout the trip, there are moments of humor, frustration, and heartfelt connection. The friends’ rebellion against parental restrictions and their pursuit of a chance at happiness highlights the human spirit’s resilience. Despite the physical and emotional obstacles they face, their determination to live life fully becomes a powerful testament to their courage. Their story underscores that even those with significant disabilities can aspire, challenge, and find unexpected companionships along the way.
