In 1996, a baby is found inside a coin locker at Western Seoul train station, and a beggar takes her in, naming Il-young. The story follows her growth in a world built on fear, power, and survival, where the line between victim and weapon is carefully drawn and guarded.

When she turns ten, she is taken by the corrupt detective, Detective Tak, who sells her to a woman referred to simply as Mother as part of his loan payment. [Mother] runs a ruthless loan shark and organ trafficking crime ring in Incheon Chinatown, sustaining her grip on power by remaining cold, calculating, and surrounding herself with people who prove useful. The dynamics of loyalty and control are relentless, and Il-young is raised to serve this empire from the shadows rather than to seek freedom.

Mother decides to raise the young child after she shows toughness and smarts, grooming her for a position in the organization as her personal debt collector. Il-young learns to navigate a complex hierarchy, mastering the methods of intimidation, negotiation, and timing that keep the operation humming.

Over time, Il-young is handed a high-stakes assignment: to collect a debt from Suk-hyun Suk-hyun, the debtor’s son. At first, Suk-hyun appears unafraid of her, and he speaks with a candor about his own struggles that catches Il-young off guard. Their exchange reveals a sliver of humanity in a world where power often dampens empathy, and what begins as a procedural debt collection gradually deepens into a tense, conflicted connection.

As the debt situation unfolds, Suk-hyun’s father flees and the pressure on Il-young intensifies. Mother issues a chilling order to kill Suk-hyun, a command Il-young is reluctant to carry out. The fate of Suk-hyun unfolds in a brutal reckoning: he is killed and his organs are harvested by Mother’s other goons, a merciless act that shatters the fragile sense of family Il-young has known.

Il-young endures a brutal beating and is prepared for shipment to the Japanese flesh trade, a dark pivot that marks the point where hope and humanity seem to slip away. She manages a precarious escape, slipping back toward the only people who ever treated her with anything like care—and she confronts the brutal system from which she was forged. In a climactic confrontation, she kills Mother, a moment that feels like both closure and catastrophe.

The discovery that the woman she believed to be her mother was, in fact, her birth mother reframes everything Il-young thought she understood about loyalty, power, and revenge. That revelation becomes a grim, defining lesson, as the opportunity to take over the empire now sits before her.
