Hazari Pal, Om Puri, is a rural farmer who leaves his village for Calcutta with his wife Kamla H. Pal, Shabana Azmi, and their three children — among them Amrita H. Pal, Ayesha Dharker — in search of a better life. Their journey into the sprawling city is rough from the start: they are cheated out of their rent money and tossed onto the streets, and Hazari struggles to find steady work that can sustain a growing family. Despite the cold realities of urban poverty, the Pals refuse to yield, drawing on mutual grit and quiet hope to carve out a place for themselves in a city that seems indifferent to their presence.

Meanwhile, at the other end of Calcutta, Max Lowe, Patrick Swayze, a Houston surgeon, arrives in pursuit of spiritual answers following the heartbreak of losing a young patient.
