Thavasi, also known as Chinna Gounder, is a wealthy and respected landlord in the Coimbatore district. His family has served as the hereditary village judge for a cluster of 18 villages, and he steps into that role about a decade after his father’s death. The elder Thavasi, a frail man, was asked to preside over a highly intricate case and passed away before delivering a verdict. The dispute centers on a newly built village temple that sits on land owned by Sundari, the second wife of Sakkarai; Sakkarai’s first wife is Thavasi’s elder sister. Sakkarai has cited law and sealed off the temple premises just before its opening. A sharp, evidence-based inquiry by Thavasi reveals that the land purchase document is forged, and he concludes that the temple premises belong to the village. A district judge commends his swift, principled handling of the matter. His mother is Aatha, and the family lives in the heart of the village, where Thavasi’s reputation for justice and loyalty has earned broad trust. Amidst this, a fierce rivalry brews with his brother-in-law, Sakkara Gounder, who is accused of causing Thavasi’s sister’s death and then marrying Sundari.
Sakkara Gounder schemes to seize the temple’s sacred ground by forging documents, but Thavasi’s vigilance unravels the deceit, foiling his plot to place the temple in the hands of roadside faction members. Enraged, Sakkara bides his time, waiting for an opportunity to strike at Thavasi. Into this tense tapestry enters Deivanai, a poor, talkative village belle who is famous for lively verbal sparring with Thavasi and his mother. One day, while Thavasi walks through the village, children complain that Deivanai is holding their spinning tops, and he intervenes to retrieve them. She challenges him to a spinning-top contest, proposing a playful duel that ends with laughter and a lesson: the loser lies down and the top continues to spin on the winner’s belly. Afraid of losing, Thavasi initially retreats, but Deivanai prods him to play—after several days of practice, he masters the game. Their banter deepens into affection, and Deivanai’s quick wit, bold spirit, and self-respect win Thavasi’s admiration. In a touching moment, Deivanai saves Thavasi’s mother from a snake bite, and when Tavasi offers money in gratitude, she declines, saying she helped out of respect for Thavasi’s family.
Deivanai owes money to Sakkara Gounder to fund her younger sister’s education. Unable to repay promptly, she hosts a Moi Virunthu, a village gathering where contributors are expected to settle her debt. Thavasi arrives uninvited but proposes to her, and she accepts. The couple’s life seems to settle into harmony for a time, until Sakkara Gounder interferes. He poisons the local pond and accuses Thavasi, installing a bogus witness to trap him. Deivanai overhears the ploy and rushes to stop the witness from reaching the panchayat, but in a confrontation, she attacks the man with a sickle. The police arrest Deivanai on murder charges, as the man dies. When Deivanai’s sister becomes pregnant, Thavasi remains silent to shield her, and the sister believes Thavasi has betrayed her trust; Deivanai, shocked, refuses to meet her husband in prison.
An advocate, already aware of Thavasi’s troubles, offers help by taking up Deivanai’s case. He secures the postmortem report and reveals that the man’s death was due to asphyxia, not Deivanai’s actions. Months pass, and Deivanai visits her imprisoned sister, who is about to give birth. The sister confesses that Deivanai is not the father of the child, and that the real father is the very witness attacked by Deivanai. To protect her, Thavasi had kept silent. The sister gives birth and dies, leaving Deivanai devastated but wiser. Realizing her mistake, Deivanai apologizes to her husband. Meanwhile, Sakkara Gounder abducts Deivanai, forcing Thavasi to come to her rescue. He exposes Sakkara Gounder in front of the village panchayat, and the truth emerges: Sakkara was the killer of the witness and had manipulated Deivanai.
In the end, Thavasi and Deivanai are vindicated, while Sakkara Gounder begs for forgiveness, a plea that goes unheard by the villagers. Thavasi finally forgives him, explaining that the aim was to open his eyes to the consequences of his misdeeds. The village rejoices in the couple’s exoneration and renewed resolve to uphold justice and integrity.
