Shanti Nutan is married off to Kewal Rehman Khan on the eve of partition, a moment that sets the course of her life. As their families move from Lahore to Delhi, fate takes a harsh turn when Shanti is left behind amid the chaos. In India, she ends up under the shadow of Abdul Rehman Pran Sikand, a hardened Afghan bandit who has a sister around Shanti’s age, a detail that complicates her sense of belonging and safety. Years pass, and when Shanti returns to India with her young son, she is met with a cautious welcome from Kewal, but that warmth quickly turns cold.
