Eddie Devane is a young sailor who has cooked up a number of inventory-related scams with his partner Howard, padding his pockets with money he’s tucked away during his service. A day before his discharge, Eddie is assigned to escort a prisoner from the Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune alongside the strict, no-nonsense Chief Petty Officer Rock Reilly. Eddie, never thrilled about the assignment, finds the arrangement tense and claustrophobic from the start. When Howard discovers Eddie’s hidden cash after peering into his desk, a new wave of pressure ripples through their already fragile alliance, threatening to expose their scheme.

The journey to Camp Lejeune tests Eddie and Rock’s patience as their personalities constantly clash. Upon arrival, they learn the prisoner is a striking, determined young woman named Toni Johnson. What begins as a routine transfer quickly spirals into a dangerous and unpredictable road trip. Toni’s attempts to escape—first by blending in as a waitress at a diner and later by more desperate acts—set off a chain of misfortunes that forces the trio to rely on one another just to survive. In a bold move, she sabotages their van by tampering with the gas tank while pretending to be innocent, leaving them stranded on a lonely road.

Their attempt to press on takes a drastic turn when they stumble into an abandoned mine and tumble into a shaft. The three struggle to balance on each other’s shoulders to climb out, with Toni darting ahead, leaving Eddie and Rock behind. Toni eventually returns, not out of obligation but a deeper sense of responsibility, and the trio finds themselves in a fragile, uneasy partnership as they press forward.

That night, they rest in a motel where conversation weaves through their strained alliances. In a quiet diner, Eddie and Rock learn more about Toni’s past: Rock is divorced and estranged from his son, while Toni reveals she initially went AWOL to visit her troubled brother in a hospital. The revelations soften their judgments and broaden their perspectives, revealing the human stories behind their actions. As the night deepens, Eddie discovers Howard has taken all the money and even the new car Eddie hoped to buy. A tense exchange ensues when Howard taunts Eddie with a riddle—How do you talk to the fish?—a riddle Eddie cannot solve. Unknown to them, Toni has been listening from another receiver and realizes Howard’s betrayal, a realization that compounds the pressure at play.

Distressed, Eddie drinks himself into a fog, and Toni uses the moment to lure him into a dangerous bargain. The next morning, Toni vanishes, stealing the car of the man who had picked her up earlier. A chase follows as Eddie and Rock pursue, culminating in a comic and chaotic moment when their van climbs an artificial volcano in an amusement park before crashing down and escaping unhurt. They catch up with Toni again, only to learn that she plans to attend her brother’s funeral, a motive that reframes her rebellion as a pursuit of family connection and closure. A heated fistfight with Rock erupts, but Toni intervenes, apologizes for fleeing, and helps broker a fragile reconciliation between Eddie and Rock. After they escort Toni back to base, Eddie realizes a surprising truth: he has fallen in love with her, a realization Rock surprisingly supports as well.

In a bold turn, the plan to simply hand Toni over is upended when Eddie and Rock secretly sabotage the prison transport van in the same way Toni did earlier. Eddie even goes so far as to impersonate a tow truck driver, slipping away with Toni inside as Navy guards stand nearby, their escape framed as a last-ditch act of devotion. The tension of duty versus desire reaches a new peak as they outmaneuver the authorities and choose their own path.

In the epilogue, set roughly a year later, Eddie and Toni live a freer life “somewhere south of the border,” building a shared life away from the shadows of their past. Rock, now retired from the Navy, has found happiness with a waitress he met at the diner earlier in their journey, suggesting that even difficult choices can lead to new beginnings. The film closes on a note of quiet possibility, balancing the thrill of their escapes with the tenderness of their growing bond.
