What is Emma Corrigan’s job role at the beginning of the film?
Read the complete plot summary of Can You Keep a Secret?, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Emma Corrigan is a junior marketing representative at Panda, an organic-food company, stationed in Chicago for a routine sales meeting that doesn’t go as planned. The client shoots down her pitch, and she finds herself drowning her nerves in a few too many drinks on the long flight home. When the plane hits turbulence, fear grips her, and in a moment of vulnerability she unloads not just professional grievances but a bundle of personal insecurities about her boyfriend, Connor. The next day at the airport, Connor appears with a sudden, even tempting proposal to move in together. Emma agrees, then immediately regrets the impulsive decision as the consequences of that gamble start to sink in.
Back at Panda, Emma faces the looming visit of Panda’s CEO, Jack Harper. When he arrives, the tall, confident man turns out to be the very stranger from the plane. He makes a deal: he won’t reveal their Chicago encounter or fire her if she agrees to keep his presence under wraps. The moment reshapes her view of the company and her own career, because his trust becomes inseparably tied to hers in ways she hadn’t anticipated. In the same breath, Emma pushes forward with a bold marketing idea: instead of aiming Panda Bites at millennials, she argues for an elderly demographic. The suggestion stirs controversy among Connor and other colleagues, who worry the product line would be better shelved altogether. To explore the possibility, Emma asks Nick, the Panda Bites rep, for a slice of the marketing budget to test this new target.
A new dynamic begins to take shape when Emma tries to revive her relationship with Connor through a spontaneous, risky encounter in the archives room. When he refuses, the relationship ends in a heartbeat. Not long after, Jack asks Emma out for dinner, and what starts as a cautious outing deepens into a passionate romance. Yet Jack remains secretive about his life and motives, a fact that worries Emma’s roommate Lissy, who warns that the partnership could be unbalanced or one-sided.
The office witnesses a moment of awkward tension when Jack speaks about Panda’s products on a television appearance. He describes the company’s newest target as the “girl on the street,” and as he elaborates, he unwittingly lists Emma’s personal secrets. The coworkers immediately recognize her, and the room fills with a mix of stifled laughter and biting commentary. Jack’s realization comes too late, and Emma withdraws from his calls and messages. When she finally confronts him in a coffee shop, she demands to know why he has been visiting Chicago so often, and he falters in sharing. Emma leaves with unanswered questions, while Lissy and their other roommate Gemma consider how to respond—Gemma even suggests involving a tabloid reporter, though Emma declines.
In a marketing room, Cybill praises Nick for landing an advertising campaign in a magazine aimed at the elderly, and the plan appears to pay off. Yet Nick takes all the credit, prompting Emma to challenge him and demand the promotion that had been promised to her. Cybill, sensing the need to support her, agrees to advance Emma’s career.
The truth behind Jack’s Chicago trips eventually emerges: his motive is deeply personal and protective. He has been working to shield his goddaughter from the glare of public life after her father’s death, hoping to let her lead a normal life. Just as this revelation lands, Gemma arrives with a reporter friend, and Jack leaves in anger. Emma decides to take one last decisive step and follows his flight back toward Chicago. In a candid conversation, she reassures him that she didn’t reveal anything to the reporter and expresses gratitude for the way he showed her her true self. With that honesty laid bare, Jack begins to open up, ready to share his own hidden truths, and the relationship moves toward a new, more authentic understanding of who they are—both personally and professionally—and how their lives may intertwine moving forward.
