Alexander Villard, Eric Roberts, is a former fencing champion who runs a highly competitive fencing school. One of his students describes him as a freak who thinks he’s living in the fourteenth century, a remark that hints at the rigid, almost ceremonial world he presides over.

Max Suba, F. Murray Abraham, is an ex-convict who introduces himself as a fencing instructor. Villard initially hires him as a janitor, but Suba gradually regains his lost form and finds a foothold within the school. Villard makes Suba spar with one of his ambitious students to prove a point, testing Suba’s resolve and teaching style.

Flashbacks deepen the conflict, revealing that Suba killed Villard’s father in a fencing duel, a revelation that adds personal weight to their rivalry.

The film builds to a dramatic duel that moves through the Academy as Villard and Suba confront each other on equal footing. Villard is finally defeated, and the loss softens his rigid stance. It’s a turning point that reframes mastery not as domination, but as mutual尊重 and growth. In the end, both men acknowledge each other’s skills and address one another with a new, earned respect, calling each other Maestro.
