Butterfly, Joey Wong Cho-Yin, is a young woman whose father once stood among the martial arts world’s legends, yet she grows up in a quiet, intimate life with her beloved Meng Sing-Wan, Tony Leung. They share a simple existence in a small hut beside a river, where Sing spends his days fishing and writing poetry, and Butterfly cherishes their peaceful happiness. Yet Sing carries a hidden life; he is part of a shadowy order, a skilled assassin, and his days of serene romance are tempered by the secret burden he bears.

Sing is a member of the Happy Forest, a clandestine group of assassins led by Sister Ko, Michelle Yeoh. With Ko’s guidance, Sing’s closest ally is Yip Cheung, Donnie Yen, and together they form the strongest bond within their tight circle. Ho Ching, Elsie Yeh, is another ally who grew up with them, a figure whose presence lingers in the back of Sing’s memories. The quartet – Ko, Sing, Yip, and Ho Ching – constitutes the core of their shared history and the fragile magic that keeps their fragile world intact.

A dangerous mission comes into play when Ko is tasked by Grand Eunuch Tsao, Chang Kuo-Chu, to steal a vital letter from Master Suen, a powerful figure from the Elites Villa sect, a letter that had been placed in Tsao’s hands by his adversary in court, Grand Eunuch Li. To pull this off, Ko instructs Sing to fake his own death and enter Suen’s service as a lone swordsman. Sing agrees, and his talents soon win the trust of Lord Suen Yuk Pa, Elvis Tsui Kam-Kong. Within Duels and deceptive appearances, Sing encounters Suen’s own woman, a figure who bears a striking resemblance to Ho Ching, a reminder of the past they both carry.

The wedding night becomes a turning point: Ho Ching attempts to seize the message, but is killed in the attempt. The loss devastates Sing, who returns to the Happy Forest to confront Ko about Ho Ching’s true fate and the fact of her undercover life. Ko struggles with the consequences of their tangled loyalties, and the friction tests their loyalties to each other and to the cause they have sworn to protect. Soon after, Ko and Yip break into Suen’s Elites Villa with Sing already inside, and together they confront Suen, ultimately defeating him and reclaiming the crucial letter. When they deliver the message to Eunuch Tsao, a shocking truth comes to light: Eunuch Li is really Tsao in disguise, and Tsao had orchestrated a plot to bring down the entire martial arts world. In the final confrontation, the teamwork of Ko, Sing, and a young prince ensures Tsao’s defeat.

In the extended uncensored ending, Butterfly and Sing share a quiet moment of reconciliation after their victory, even as Ko faces an impossible choice. Ko steps off a cliff, choosing her fate, while Yip follows, holding her as they both drift into the sea, confessing their willingness to die together. Butterfly and Sing watch with heavy hearts as their friends face their end, and the survivors must live with the consequences of a world forever altered by the clashes within the martial arts realm.
