Set largely in London in the wake of the September 11 attacks, the film sits at the crossroads of a city grappling with fear, suspicion, and the fragility of belonging during a tense era.

At the center is Nazneen, who was raised in a rural village in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. Her childhood with her sister seems almost idyllic until tragedy strikes when their mother drowns herself in response to the hardships of their life. Their father arranges a marriage for the elder daughter, and Nazneen is sent to London to join a middle‑aged, educated man named Chanu, who will become her husband and bring her to a cramped flat on Brick Lane, the heartbeat of the British Bengali community.

Seventeen years pass, and the couple raises two daughters in a city that feels both alien and intimate. The homesick Nazneen struggles with a tight, ill‑fitting life: a small space, scarce money, and the emotional weight of a world that seems increasingly hostile. Her only lifelines are the letters from her sister back home, painting a picture of a freer life that she longs to reclaim. Meanwhile, the couple’s financial pressures grow, and Chanu, feeling overlooked and frustrated, resigns from a job he believed was his due.

To help make ends meet, Nazneen receives a sewing machine from a sympathetic neighbour and begins mending jeans, pulling herself into a practical independence. She also forms a tentative bond with Karim, a charismatic man who delivers clothes to her, and whose presence introduces warmth and complexity into her restrained world.

As the Bangladeshi Muslim community in London becomes more visibly religious, Nazneen is drawn into a broader social world when Karim invites her to a Unite program run by the Bengal Tigers. The aging Chanu’s financial missteps come to light when Nazneen discovers he has borrowed money from a loan shark, a revelation that unsettles the fragile balance of their marriage. Karim’s invitation to his uncle’s factory and the kiss they share deepen Nazneen’s sense that she could be part of a different life, even as she grapples with the consequences of these choices.

A harsh realization follows when Nazneen learns the truth about her sister’s life, which triggers an emotional collapse. The family’s sense of security is further strained as debt collectors from the loan shark press for payment, and the looming possibility of leaving Britain to return to Bangladesh hangs over them. Nazneen confronts her husband about the debt, which he largely brushes off, and the tension peaks at a Muslim rally where Chanu’s critical stance clashes with the crowd’s fervor.

In a fateful turning point, Nazneen tells Karim she cannot marry him because she has changed—she is no longer the village girl she once was. He leaves in heartbreak, while Nazneen asserts her own agency against the loan sharks, even as she overpays the debt in protest and refuses to swear on the Quran that more is owed.
