Nolan Mack, a 60-something bank loan officer with an impressive twenty-six-year tenure, grapples with impending change as his supervisor, Dan Beaumont, considers promoting him to manager. Resisting the shift, Nolan finds solace in the familiar, especially with his wife Joy, who he shares a deep intellectual bond with, although they lead separate lives, opting for separate bedrooms due to their lack of intimacy.
In a bid to navigate his own fulfilling yet challenging world, Nolan makes his regular rounds to visit his paralyzed father, Lionel, in a care facility. On his return home, however, he is once again lured to the city’s underbelly—the red-light district, sparking a sense of guilt and intrigue within him. It is here that he crosses paths with Leo, a youthful hustler in his twenties. Their initial meeting is fraught with misunderstanding; Leo mistakenly presumes Nolan is seeking a sexual encounter rather than the company he craves. To assuage his impulse, Nolan takes the young man to a motel, where he strives to connect through conversation rather than consummation.
Despite returning home weighed down by guilt, Nolan’s heart is stirred by Leo’s circumstances, prompting him to meet the young man again under false pretenses. At their second meeting, they find themselves back at the motel, but instead of pursuing a transactional relationship, Nolan focuses on getting to know Leo and sharing bits of his life. As Nolan becomes increasingly entangled in Leo’s struggles, he begins to notice the toll these secret encounters are taking on his personal and professional life.
Life becomes even more turbulent when Leo falls victim to a violent assault by Eddie, a drug-addicted pimp. Nolan intervenes, paying Eddie to leave Leo unharmed, showcasing a deepening bond between the two. This act of kindness leads to a tender moment where Nolan tends to Leo’s injuries, revealing a softer side of the older man. Yet, with his job under scrutiny from Winston, a college professor and longtime best friend, Nolan struggles to conceal the truth about his black eye—an injury sustained during his rescue of Leo.
As the complexities of his relationships deepen, Nolan is faced with mounting pressure. Despite his attempts to introduce Leo to a more stable life by helping him secure a job, Leo’s continuing reliance on the streets strains their relationship. During a pivotal encounter, Nolan discovers Leo’s continued association with older clients and grapples with feelings of frustration and concern.
Nolan’s home life becomes increasingly strained as Joy senses the changing dynamics. In a moment of desperation for connection, she invites him to lie down with her, albeit not crossing the barrier into physical intimacy. As Joy travels out of town, Nolan finds himself unable to resist Leo’s gravitational pull until a confrontation erupts in a parking lot at the bank—an event witnessed by his colleague Winston, further complicating the narrative Nolan is weaving.
As the tension escalates, Nolan helplessly watches as Leo descends into the depths of addiction, culminating in a dire hospital visit after Leo’s drug overdose. Torn between his love for Joy and the stark truths of his feelings, Nolan spirals into confrontation and self-discovery. In a climactic showdown with Joy, he admits to living a lie, realizing that their marriage cannot continue without honesty. In a transformative decision, he leaves both Joy and the stability of his job at the bank behind, embarking on a journey to live authentically, hinting at new possibilities for love and self-acceptance as he prepares to meet another man in a cafe, signifying the dawn of a new chapter in his life.
