The film links the age‑old conflict of crime and punishment with personal conscience and existential choice, tying individual decisions to the nation’s history. Inspired by Pushkin’s image of a mysterious knot, it shows how a single misstep can unleash a chain of tragic events, and how a ruler’s error may jeopardize an entire people.

Based on Alexander Pushkin’s 1825 play Boris Godunov, the tale opens with the murder in Uglich of the young heir to the Russian throne, carried out by unknown hands. Years pass as the question of who will inherit the throne lingers over the realm. Boris Godunov [Maksim Sukhanov] ascends to the throne, weighing his own fitness to rule and the heavy responsibilities that come with the crown.
During a public ceremony, the decision to crown Godunov is announced, while behind the scenes a covert struggle for power unfolds among rival boyar factions, shaping policy and loyalty at court.
Godunov’s rule is shadowed by personal torment as he is haunted by visions of the murdered heir. In the shadows, the monk Grigory Otrepyev [Andrey Merzlikin], hiding in the Chudov Monastery, learns from Pimen [Mikhail Kozakov] the truth behind the crime and resolves to wrest control of the realm. He mobilizes allies, seeks foreign aid, and amasses an army that finally heads toward Moscow to challenge the established order.
The film emphasizes how one dangerous choice or a karmic misstep can set off a chain of deadly consequences, underscoring the idea that a ruler’s decisions can endanger the entire nation.
