In a small Indian town, two inseparable friends, Babu and Malik, hatch a prank that goes wrong and leads to a theft they can’t easily undo. When Malik’s father steps in to bail him out, acting as surety, there’s no one to stand for Babu. The consequence is harsh: Babu ends up in a juvenile centre, while Malik moves forward in life.

As the years pass, the paths of the two men diverge. Malik becomes a police inspector, chasing criminals with a steady hand, while Babu gravitates toward crime and finds himself confined behind bars once more. When he is released, his first instinct is to reconnect with his old partner in crime, Bali, and together they start laying the groundwork for another heist. Malik and Babu cross paths again, and Malik urges Babu to reform his ways. Yet Babu has already tried to walk that path and was falsely accused of stealing a necklace that belonged to his employer’s wife, a blow that hardens his resolve but also tightens his moral knot.

Babu’s attempt at staying clean is complicated by the shadow of Bali and his gang. Bali and his men are eventually arrested, and they cast the blame on Babu, accusing him of having betrayed them. When Bali is released on bail, a confrontation erupts between him and Babu, culminating in Bali’s death. This violent turn drives Babu to flee Bombay and seek refuge in Jogendra Nagar in northern India, where a man named Bhagat manipulates his fear into an offer: masquerade as Kundan, the heir to a wealthy man named Shahji.

Reluctantly, Babu accepts the disguise. As Kundan, he slides into the household of Shahji, winning the trust of Shahji, his wife Rukmani, and their daughter Maya. The financial lure grows large enough to keep Bhagat at bay, and Babu manages to amass cash in installments to pay off his coercer. But Bhagat’s greed is insatiable, and he presses Babu to steal everything—the cash, the jewelry—and vanish. Babu, however, is torn by a growing sense of compassion and reluctance to steal from people who have welcomed him into their life.

Complicating matters further is Babu’s burgeoning love for Maya, a feeling that awkwardly clashes with the role he’s been forced to play. The romance deepens the tension: Maya is seemingly treated as a sister, which makes Babu’s affection all the more dangerous to his precarious cover. Caught between Bhagat’s demands, his own developing loyalty to Shahji’s family, and the relentless pursuit of the police, Babu finds himself trapped. No matter what choice he makes, he risks entangling himself with Bhagat, with the very family he’s infiltrated, and with the law closing in from all sides.

The narrative unfolds as a slow-burn moral drama, where identity is as fragile as the lies that sustain it. The cityscapes—from Bombay’s bustle to the quieter streets of Jogendra Nagar—frame a tale about the cost of double lives, the pull of affection over allegiance, and the inescapable pull of a past that refuses to stay buried. As the chase tightens and alliances blur, the story ponders whether Babu can ever carve out a genuine future without sacrificing the bonds he’s formed—or without paying the ultimate price for the sins of the past.
