A period crime thriller set in 1808, when an imperial investigator is dispatched to a seemingly tranquil island to probe a string of brutal murders. The islanders blame a vengeful ghost, angry over a wrongful execution seven years earlier, while the investigator suspects a more earthly conspiracy behind the killings.

Set in 1808 on the remote island of Donghwa Island, a place where a technologically advanced paper mill drives a bustling village and brings a surprising amount of wealth to its residents. The mill’s innovations, paired with a climate and trees perfectly suited for papermaking, help the island carve out a profitable niche in high-quality paper, with trade routes stretching as far as China. Its secluded location grants both privacy and secrecy, enabling the island to function with a notable degree of autonomy while sustaining a thriving community.
Yet this isolated and largely autonomous patch of land is soon shadowed by a string of gruesome murders. The killings are not only numerous but carried out with a sadistic, methodical precision that unsettles the townspeople and draws concern from the outside world. In response, the government dispatches special investigator Wonkyu Cha Seung-won to crack the case and restore a sense of order to the fragile ecosystem of the island.
As Wonkyu delves into the pattern of violence, he uncovers a tangle of hidden truths embedded in the island’s history. His investigation leads him back to an incident from seven years earlier, when the former owner of the mill was executed for practicing Catholicism. The townspeople are convinced that the dead man’s spirit has returned to exact revenge, and this belief colors much of the local atmosphere as the investigation progresses. The detective must navigate fear, superstition, and long-buried grievances to discern what truly lies behind the murders.
The deeper he goes, the more Wonkyu begins to question the nature of fear and culpability itself. Beyond the culprit and the killings, the case reveals something unsettling about human nature—a truth that challenges his assumptions about justice, guilt, and the ever-narrowing line between vengeance and accountability. As the island’s secrets seep to the surface, the investigation becomes less about finding a single killer and more about understanding the forces that drive people to protect, fear, and ultimately betray one another.
