In the late 16th century, the Joseon kingdom stands on the precipice of disaster as a powerful Japanese invasion looms. Lee Mong-hak Cha Seung-won, an illegitimate scion from a cadet branch of the royal lineage, partners with the legendary blind swordsman Hwang Jeong-hak Hwang Jung-min to challenge the corruption and inequality that festers at court. Together they share a vision of a freer, fairer world where the invaders are repelled and the ruling system is reformed. Persecuted by a jealous and ineffective king, Lee chooses a path of rebellion, forming a growing force that aims to overthrow the throne itself. Alongside them is Gyeon-ja Baek Sung-hyun, the bastard child of a family slain by Mong-hak, whose fate becomes entwined with the rebels’ deadly gambit as he seeks vengeance and a future shaped by their shared courage. Their alliance is forged in hardship, and it tests loyalties, betrayals, and the limits of sacrifice.
As the Great Alliance rebel army presses outward, Hwang Jeong-hak confronts Mong-hak in a brutal confrontation that tests every limit of skill and resolve. After a long, grueling duel, Mong-hak’s prowess proves overwhelming, and the blind swordsman falls. With Jeong-hak’s death, Gyeon-ja steels himself for a perilous journey toward Seoul, the capital where Mong-hak intends to seize the throne and seal the rebels’ fate. Meanwhile, Mong-hak learns that Japanese forces are marching toward the countryside, threatening to raze villages and crush any remaining resistance. Yet he pushes his rebel army onward toward the capital, abandoning the vulnerable people who had flocked to their banner for protection.
When the rebels finally reach Seoul, they find the king has abandoned the city, leaving the palace in a desolate silence. Gyeon-ja reaches the throne pavilion just as Mong-hak closes in on ultimate power. The Japanese army arrives in force, unleashing a brutal massacre on the rebel ranks. In a final, fateful act, Gyeon-ja kills Mong-hak but is mortally wounded by the invaders, his vow for a better future fulfilled only through his own sacrifice. The battle ends with a grim quiet over the city as both rebellion and ambition collide in a tragic reckoning. The film lingers on the costs of rebellion, the pain of loyalty tested, and the fragile line between heroism and ruin.
