Black Eagle 1988

Through radio traffic, the US and the Soviet Union learn that an F-111 carrying a sensitive missile guidance system is lost near Malta. Dean Rickert, the CIA chief who coordinates the operation, initially dispatches Steve Henderson to retrieve it, but the directive quickly shifts: Ken Tani, code-named “Black Eagle,” must be recalled from a vacation with his kids to take the lead. To help, they enlist the aid of Jesuit priest Joseph Begelia. The setup blends espionage with a personal quest, as the mission becomes as much about safeguarding a family as recovering the weapon.

Agent Henderson is caught attempting to place a tracking beacon on the Soviet trawler Leontev, and is killed in the process. Ken Tani is pulled from Malta containment and joins up with his two sons, Denny Tani and Bryan, along with Patricia Parker, a fellow CIA operative. The trio, under cover as oceanographers, eventually locate the wreck of the downed plane. The Soviets interrogate them but, convinced they are researchers, keep them under observation. On a quiet beach, Ken Tani shares with his sons a belief in the “Black Eagle,” a spirit inside them that could guide and steady them in moments of danger.

The tension ratchets up when the Soviets anonymously invite Begelia, Tani, and Parker to a casino in Malta. Afterward, an assassin is discovered in Ken Tani’s hotel room, and the group defeats him. They move the assassin’s children to a safehouse, and Joseph Begasia (the Jesuit priest) reveals he is tied into a larger strategic operation, though [Ken Tani] remains the principal agent in charge. Colonel Vladimir Klimenko, leader of the Soviet effort to recover the missile, learns that the Rapid Angel device will be extracted from the plane aboard the Gorkiy, a cargo ship, raising the stakes for both sides.

To retrieve the weapon, Ken Tani makes a daring move: he hang-glides to the wreck and begins disassembly of the missile nosecone. Meanwhile, Begelia’s associate on the boat is captured by sailors from the Leontev. Tani eliminates the pursuers and escapes to a cave system beneath a church where Begelia is conducting Mass. They bring the nosecone to Rickert, and explain that the Rapid Angel component is still missing. Rickert insists that Tani remain on Malta to finish the job and keeps his own children safe by moving them off the island.

As the plan progresses, Parker and the two boys are pursued on the way to the airport by Klimenko’s man, Andrei. Their driver, Peter, betrays them and drags them into a dangerous trap. Bryan escapes during the ruse, and Parker and Denny pretend he is ill to buy time. They escape the fort outside Medina, signaling their location with Denny’s Dodgers hat, and Ken Tani leads a daring rescue with Parker and Denny, while Begelia holds the fort’s guard in check.

With Parker and his kids sent off to Rome, Begelia and Tani reconnoiter the Gorkiy in the shipyard. Begelia sabotages the ship’s navigation circuitry, and Tani tells Begelia to step back so he can finish the mission alone, preparing to summon the spirit of the Black Eagle. He boards the Gorkiy and fights his way through Klimenko’s men. Begelia’s charges go off, preventing the ship from leaving port, so Klimenko seizes the Rapid Angel device and flees to the Leontev. In the ensuing chase, Begelia returns and distracts most of Klimenko’s men, allowing Tani to confront Andrei once more. Andrei’s girlfriend distracts him briefly, giving Tani the chance to swim to the Leontev.

Begelia rigs the Leontev with explosives while Tani confronts Klimenko and recovers the Rapid Angel. As the Leontev attempts to pull away, Andrei is drawn into the ship’s propeller and killed. Tani and Begelia manage to escape with Andrei’s girlfriend and destroy the Leontev, ending the immediate threat to the missile’s fate.

In the aftermath, the local police inspector recognizes that Ken Tani is not an oceanographer, and simply advises him to leave Malta at his earliest convenience. Tani eventually arrives in Rome, where he is reunited with his waiting sons and Patricia Parker, signaling a return to family life after a mission that tested his faith, his training, and the idea of what it means to be a protector in a world of shifting loyalties and dangerous technologies. The adventure blends high-stakes geo-politics with personal loyalty, leaving a lasting impression of a man who carries a quiet—but resilient—resolve shaped by the spirit of the Black Eagle.
