Black as Night 2021

Set in post-Katrina New Orleans, the film follows 15-year-old Shawna, Asjha Cooper, a teenager wrestling with self-esteem and the weight of her dark skin. She lives with her father and brother, while her mother Denise struggles with drug addiction in the dilapidated Ombreaux housing project, a place still scarred by the hurricane. The city’s shadows feel personal to her, and her summers carry a quiet, unsettled tension that mirrors her inner struggle.

During a summer walk home from a party, Shawna is attacked by a group of vampires. She is bitten but survives, and this close call reveals that vampires are preying on the city’s vulnerable homeless population. Her fears become reality when her mother becomes undead, prompting Shawna to vow revenge. The horror lands hard, but it also sharpens her resolve to protect those who can’t defend themselves.

Determined to stop the bloodsuckers, Shawna teams up with her best friend Pedro, her crush Chris, and the affluent yet eccentric Granya, Abbie Gayle. Their investigation points them toward Lefrak, Craig Tate, a notorious figure believed to lead the vampires. Yet the trio soon uncovers the true mastermind: Babineaux, Keith David, a charismatic preacher who uses his position to recruit followers under the guise of social justice. The sense of danger tightens as the moral line between zeal and menace blurs, and the city’s hopes hinge on a careful, dangerous vigil.

Babineaux’s plan is simple and cruel: forge an army of vampires to reclaim power for the oppressed, even as his methods destroy lives in the process. In the climactic confrontation, Shawna faces Babineaux in the mansion’s hidden tunnels. Drawing on her mother’s silver locket, she manages to weaken the preacher and turn him to ash. The moment feels both cathartic and costly, a fragile victory earned through grit and sacrifice.

The victory comes at a cost: Pedro is bitten during the battle and is left hanging between life and death. The final scene leaves his fate unresolved, as Pedro appears at Shawna’s door, knocking with a possibility that he has become a vampire, leaving the audience with an open ending.
