Bite the Bullet Plot Summary
What happens in Bite the Bullet from start to finish, spoilers included, with a timeline of 12 key events. The opening is below; the full summary is a 3-minute read.
Spoilers ahead
Based on true events from the early twentieth century, this tale follows a grueling 700-mile cross-country horse race in 1906, where a winner-take-all prize of $2,000 (roughly $70,000 today) hangs over the heads of fifteen diverse contestants and the lives they lead off the track. The field is a mosaic of personalities and motives, from two former Rough Riders who must weigh friendship against the drive to win, to a morally compromised socialite, and from a weathered cowhand in fragile health to a posh English lord who enters for sport rather than necessity. The mix also includes a Mexican rider with a stubborn toothache, and a wealthy owner who has poured resources into a championship-grade horse that he refuses to see beaten.
