Jin-a, Lee Ji-eun, a 22-year-old prostitute, arrives at a small seaside motel called the Birdcage Inn to replace the previous occupant. The inn is run by a couple who have a daughter and a son, and they offer Jin-a room and board in exchange for a cut of the money she earns from her work. Jin-a spends her nights working and her days drawing and watching the sea, trying to find a living rhythm in a place that feels both intimate and fragile.

The household dynamics are heavy and complicated. The father, Jang Hang-seon, is well regarded, quiet, and seemingly caring, the type who provides for his family with a steady, almost protective presence. Yet beneath that veneer lies a disturbing truth: he rapes Jin-a, a brutal act that shadows the rest of Jin-a’s stay and frames much of what follows. The mother, Lee In-ok, views Jin-a primarily as a source of money—an instrument to fund her children’s education and daily needs—rather than as a person with her own dignity and limits. This economic calculus hardens the family’s gaze toward Jin-a, making her presence feel instrumental rather than human.

Across the room, Hyun-woo, Ahn Jae-mo, the son, is driven by a troubling mix of curiosity and sexual hunger. He begs to be allowed to take naked photos of Jin-a for a contest and to have sex with her. Jin-a initially resists, but after Hyun-woo’s persistent pleading, she consents to pose for him on the deck of a ship by the seaside and ends up having sex with him. The moment marks a turning point: Hyun-woo later uses a Walkman to monitor Jin-a’s room and listen in on Jin-a and her clients, blurring boundaries between privacy and exploitation in the inn’s already tense atmosphere.

Hye-mi, Lee Hae-eun, the daughter, is equally troubled and hostile. On the surface she embodies a cool, disdainful attitude toward Jin-a, refusing to share toiletries and space, and openly challenging Jin-a’s presence as if she and Jin-a belong to different worlds. Her hostility sharpens when she discovers that her sexually frustrated boyfriend has gone to Jin-a and had sex with her, a revelation that deepens the rift between the two young women.

A turning point arrives when Hye-mi, through rummaging in Jin-a’s room and belongings, gains a glimpsed empathy for Jin-a’s experience. That night, she lies in bed and eavesdrops on Jin-a and a customer, an observation that begins to melt the walls between them, even as danger still looms.

Meanwhile, a publisher who has seen Hyun-woo’s photos uses the moment to manipulate the situation: he convinces Hyun-woo to sell the photos at a deceptively low price, exploiting Jin-a’s vulnerability for profit. Jin-a’s former pimp reappears, demanding money after seeing her nude photos in a magazine. Believing Jin-a has earned a fortune, he beats her when she refuses to pay. Hye-mi steps in to protect Jin-a, trying to shield her from the violence that keeps erupting around them.

The distress culminates in Jin-a’s suicide attempt, a desperate act that leaves her found by a frightened Hye-mi, who has dreamed of Jin-a in danger. The two women finally sit together, leaning toward one another in a fragile reconciliation that hints at a possible human connection beyond the walls of the Birdcage Inn.

That same night ends with a stark, intimate moment of choice and consequence: a customer arrives at the inn, and Hye-mi spends the night with him instead of Jin-a, losing her virginity in a scene that starkly contrasts Jin-a’s earlier vulnerability with Hye-mi’s own awakening. The film lingers in the aftermath of these tense relationships, inviting viewers to consider power, class, and longing in a coastal motel where survival often comes at the cost of dignity.
