The film opens with Malorie Hayes, portrayed by Sandra Bullock, urgently instructing two children known only as Boy and Girl, played by Julian Edwards and Vivien Lyra Blair, to keep their blindfolds on as they prepare for a perilous journey across the river. Five years earlier, Malorie, an artist expecting her first child, is visited by her sister Jessica, portrayed by Sarah Paulson.
