In a bleak, unnamed American city of the 1950s, Ren and Stimpy wander the streets starving and homeless, trying to survive another day with no real place to call home. An abrupt, brutal twist arrives when a dogcatcher drives over them with his car, hauling them off to the dog pound. The pound is shown as a stark, almost prison-like world—the “big house” in American slang—where life inside feels rigid, guarded, and unkind. Inside, the other dogs seem to enjoy a sybaritic lifestyle within their cell, a jarring contrast to the harsh reality outside their cages.

A guard suddenly appears and takes away one dog, Phil, to be “put to sleep.” Ren initially cannot grasp what that phrase means, and his confusion spirals into fear as he learns that Phil has been euthanized. The threat of the same fate hangs heavy over him and Stimpy, fueling a growing sense of dread that their lives could be abruptly ended.

Shortly after, Stimpy coughs up hairballs that land on Ren, unintentionally disguising him as a poodle. The disguise becomes a bizarre beacon of hope as a young visitor to the pound notices Ren and seems interested in adopting him—or so it seems at first. The Little Girl is drawn to Ren because of the unusual disguise, and in a moment of compassion, Ren asks her to consider adopting Stimpy as well.

The pair are ultimately adopted and step into a new home for the first time. In this fresh start, the girl’s mother, Mom, provides Ren with a sweater to wear, while Stimpy is given a litter box. This simple sign of belonging paints their new life with warmth and hope. Grateful for his first material possession and the chance at a different life, Ren settles into the unexpected comfort of this new environment, even as Stimpy’s exuberant energy leads to a humorous mishap: he accidentally drags Ren into the litter box, leaving Ren both uncomfortable and amused as their bond deepens in the quiet, ordinary moments of a life beyond the pound.
