Bhoot: Part One - The Haunted Ship 2020

Meera’s third birthday is celebrated aboard the Sea-Bird, a merchant crew bringing warmth and noise to a small celebration that briefly disguises the ship’s darker currents. Meera Sara Gesawat plays the center of that moment, but a sudden, eerie sound pulls her away and a ghostly presence cuts the party short with a frightened scream. The image of that night lingers, foreshadowing a deeper past that will reach forward years later.

Years later, shipping officer Prithvi Maurya [Vicky Kaushal] is navigating a life that blends duty with danger, and with the support of his loyal friend and colleague Riaz he secretly elopes with his pregnant partner Sapna [Bhumi Pednekar]. This union marks a fragile peace after Prithvi has already thwarted a human trafficking operation, a victory shadowed by Riaz’s caution about getting pulled into darker schemes. Sapna’s pregnancy brings a bright possibility, and the couple soon welcomes a daughter named Megha, a new spark of hope that glows against the backdrop of a restless sea.

Sometime later, the pair lives apart as Prithvi continues to work the shipping lanes. He and Riaz take on a grim assignment: they investigate the Sea-Bird, which has turned up abandoned at an unmanned port, and they recover its logbook as a record of past voyages. The ships’ old secrets begin to surface when a couple on board is shown sharing a romantic moment before a haunting force claims them, and a girl’s body is found buried along the beach. The mystery deepens as Prithvi and Riaz attempt to tow the Sea-Bird for disposal, only for their salvage vessel to suffer damage in the process. During the recovery, Prithvi is injured while saving a drowning man, and he glimpses a girl through a hole in the hull, an image that unsettles him deeply.

As the crewwork resumes, Prithvi is plagued by unsettling visions—his memory of the Sea-Bird appears to merge with the ship itself, along with images of Sapna and Megha. A flashback reveals that the fated river-rafting vacation ended in tragedy due to inadequate safety equipment, a truth that weighs heavily on Prithvi’s conscience. Disturbed, he seeks guidance from Professor Raghuveer Joshi [Ashutosh Rana], a scholar who studies life beyond death and who himself experiences ghostly visions of his wife and daughter. Armed with new questions, Prithvi returns to the Sea-Bird and finds a video camera hidden in the engine room; the ghost attacks him again, but Riaz intervenes and saves him from a fatal encounter.

Prithvi begins to believe that the girl he has seen on the ship is Meera, and that she has been possessed by the haunting force for more than a decade. He brings his findings to Joshi, who urges him to identify the ghost and face the truth behind the ship’s haunted past. Riaz remains wary, worried that the investigation might overstep their professional boundaries. The investigation uncovers a grim truth: the ship’s crew largely committed suicide, leaving only Meera and her mother, Vandana [Meher Vij], as survivors. Prithvi grows increasingly suspicious of an unidentified man among the crew, a clue that suggests a hidden danger still connected to the Sea-Bird’s former life.

A pivotal moment arrives when Prithvi and Riaz meet Vandana, and they play the birthday party video for Meera. Vandana reveals the Sea-Bird’s involvement in drug smuggling and other illicit activities, and she recounts how an unnamed man, Amar, intervened to prevent her from taking her own life after the captain assaulted her. Vandana explains that she and Amar fell in love and planned to escape, stashing evidence of the captain’s crimes to expose him, but Amar was captured and died under torture. This revelation intensifies the tension, hinting at betrayals and a love that could still haunt the living.

To break the hold of the past, Vandana agrees to reveal a secret room aboard the ship. She, Professor Joshi, and Prithvi prepare for a perilous night before the Sea-Bird is to be towed away. Inside the skeletal corridors, they confront the ghost, and in a shocking turn, Vandana admits that she killed Amar to save herself. The confrontation ends tragically as Vandana and Joshi are killed, while Riaz uses the fuel to create a distraction. Prithvi discovers Amar’s corpse hanging in the secret room and, in a final act of ritual cleansing, burns the body to dispel the malevolent force. With the spirit finally released, Prithvi and Meera escape through the hull’s hole to safety.

In the quiet aftermath, the film shifts to a gentler moment as Prithvi teaches Meera how to eat noodles, a symbol of ordinary life returning after extraordinary fear. The post-credits scene lingers on a shadowy, unknown figure moving around Prithvi’s home, a quiet reminder that the sea’s dark memories can still reach the shore.
