Durga Devi, Aruna Irani, stands at the center of Beti No.1, a film that shines a light on how society often lowers the status of women. Her husband, Dashrath Bhatnagar, a gharjamai, lives under her roof and runs the household alongside Durga Devi. The couple has three sons—Ram, Laxman, and Bharat Govinda—who grow up under a rigid, traditional code that places daughters’ fates far lower in the family hierarchy. As time passes, Priya’s pregnancy adds another layer of hope for Durga Devi: the expectation of a grandson who could change the family’s fortunes. Three days later, Durga Devi insists on taking her “grandson” home, and a practical agreement is struck: Bharat persuades Mulayamchand and his wife to live closer and to swap the children with a daylight/nightly routine—Bharat’s family would keep Mulayamchand’s son during the day, and Mulayamchand’s family would keep Priya’s daughter during the day, returning each night. The two mothers live this nomadic arrangement, moving from house to house as they try to soothe and protect their own children, each hoping for a different version of happiness for their families.
