Spoilers ahead
Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, Before Winter Comes follows British Major Giles Burnside as he is assigned to a refugee camp in occupied Austria. His mission is precise but arduous: sort the thousands of displaced civilians into the Russian and American zones. Burnside is a by-the-book officer, steady and reserved, yet he quickly encounters a communications maelstrom born from the camp’s multilingual mix. The refugee Janovic, a remarkably language-savvy man, steps forward to translate and to help run the operation, bridging gaps between soldiers and civilians and keeping the camp running with a quiet competence.
