In 1960s East Germany, a couple attempts to shield their child from the truth about her heritage, claiming her dark skin is a mere coincidence. As a teenager, she unexpectedly uncovers the reality of her parentage: her mother, Sigrid, fell in love with Lucien, a student from Togo, while married to Armin. This autobiographical essay film, directed by Ines Johnson-Spain, explores the complex strategies of denial employed by her parents in an effort to maintain a sense of normalcy. Through interviews with her father and others, the film reflects on identity, social norms, and the enduring bonds of family.
