The film unfolds in the summer of 1979 in Pößneck, a town in Thuringia, where two neighboring families hatch an audacious plan to escape the German Democratic Republic and reach West Germany by building and piloting a self-made hot air balloon. The Wetzel family, Günter and Petra, along with their two children, initially set their sights on a daring crossing, but Günter hesitates, concerned that eight people in a small balloon might be a dangerous gambit. Petra, worried for the safety of their kids, agrees to pause. Around them, the Strelzyk family—Doris and Peter, together with their two sons—see a window of opportunity.
