Vilas Varaatkar and Sarang Acharya are two cheerful bachelors, part of a trio of orphans sharing a middle-class home, with a third, Dinesh Patil, joining their flat life. What they don’t realize is that Dinesh is secretly married to Kamal, a poor woman who could not provide dowry, a fact that culminates in a painful separation and the abandonment of their newborn son at Kamal’s brother’s home. Meanwhile, Dinesh’s factory boss, Babasaheb Kirtikar, planning a brighter future for him, orders a four-month training stint abroad in Hong Kong and Singapore and arranges for Dinesh to marry his daughter, Priya.
In a parallel thread, Vilas, an electronics salesman, crosses paths with Shyamala when she buys a washing machine and then a TV from his shop, while Sarang encounters Meenakshi as he delivers books from his small moving library. Both couples quickly fall in love, but their fortunes are blocked by formidable fathers: Shyamala’s possessive father, K. C. Tavdaane, and Meenakshi’s yoga-obsessed father, Bapusaheb Aasankar. Nevertheless, Vilas and Sarang support each other as they pursue the hearts of Shyamala and Meenakshi’s fathers, learning together how to navigate these obstacles.
As Dinesh heads away for his training, Kamal endures constant taunts from her brother-in-law’s wife, who makes her life unbearable, driving Kamal to bring her son to Dinesh’s town. In a desperate turn, Kamal is forced to leave and her son is abandoned on the doorstep of Vilas and Sarang’s house to escape a dangerous auto-rickshaw driver. Despite the challenges, Vilas and Sarang welcome the boy, caring for him with warmth and naming him “Murphy.” Kamal, grateful for their compassion, asks them to appoint her as Murphy’s governess so she can remain close to her son.
Dinesh eventually returns to India and invites Vilas and Sarang to his engagement ceremony with Priya. Kamal is horrified to learn the truth about Dinesh and Priya, and a misunderstanding arises when Priya accuses Kamal of stealing her and Dinesh’s photographs. Kamal then reveals a deeper truth to Vilas and Sarang: she is Murphy’s biological mother, and Dinesh is her estranged husband. The revelation shocks the two friends, who decide to stand by Kamal and Murphy, and to teach Dinesh a deserved lesson, while also supporting Shyamala and Meenakshi in their own journeys toward happiness.
