Baari Tar Bangla 2014

Roopchand Sen Saswata Chatterjee is a professional writer who can no longer write. When he realizes the block is psychological rather than physical, he visits a psychiatrist, Abanti, who uncovers the life behind his writer’s block. A middle-class boy, Roopchand was pushed by his mother to become a Bangla writer like Bengali icon Satyajit Ray. He begins his career as an advertising writer and finds early success, but a downturn arrives that changes everything.

His mother, disappointed by her ambitions for him, commits suicide. Roopchand then becomes a political writer at his father’s urging; as the political landscape shifts, the opportunities disappear, and he loses that job as well. He grows used to writing for others and eventually finds he cannot write in Bangla for himself. Understanding his problem, Abanti urges him to reclaim his own voice by embracing Roopchand, the copywriter he once was. This pivot leads him to a cause he cares about—the anti-eviction movement—and, as he becomes involved, he discovers a personal and professional resurgence: he regains his ability to write in Bangla.

With the help of this renewed purpose, Roopchand reconnects with his talent and the life around him begins to change. The film reinforces themes of identity, creativity, and resilience and shows how a public movement can restore a private voice. The ensemble also features Laboni Sarkar as Singer, Shantilal Mukherjee, Sumit Samaddar as Photik, and Tulika Basu.
