Ay Büyürken Uyuyamam 2011

In a small Aegean town in Turkey, Melek Hazal Kaya is known as the most beautiful woman around. She has two adult daughters and works in a pastry shop with her husband, yet she is deeply unhappy in her marriage, a situation she endures because her mother pushed her into it. Melek often dresses provocatively, which stirs mixed feelings among the villagers: women envy her beauty, while many men both desire and resent her.

Dönek Hüsam Hakan Boyav stands as the wealthiest man in the village and is not immune to Melek’s allure. Married but unable to resist her, he repeatedly makes indecent propositions toward her. When his advances are rebuffed, he orders a friend to publicly vilify her husband. The plan works, and Melek decides to divorce and push her husband out of the house, taking charge of the pastry shop on her own.

A new, attractive young man arrives in town—Mert Fırat Çelik—who quickly falls for Melek, despite the age difference. Around the same time, a young doctor arrives, and Melek contemplates seducing him; the doctor is portrayed by Fırat Tanış. Meanwhile, the ex-fiancé of Melek’s daughter Yaman Serdar Yeğin returns from the army, and his presence adds another layer of tension to the village’s fragile morality.

Yaman notices Melek and is drawn to her, leading to a tense confrontation when he attacks her in a moment of violence. Melek fights back, striking him in self-defense. As her life becomes more entangled with Mert and the town’s gossip, Dönek Husam escalates his harassment, and Melek publicly shames him in return. Enraged, Husam swears to kill Melek and summons the men of the village to the mosque, where he publicly brands her a witch.

Melek tries to flee, but the mob closes in, and she is brutally attacked. Mert tries to intervene to protect her, and both of them perish in the ensuing chaos. The film explores how envy, hatred, and rigid moral codes can lead a community to brutal acts, and it suggests that beauty can become a target for jealousy and violence. In the end, Melek pays the ultimate price for her beauty, a stark reminder of the peril that can accompany desire and social judgment.
