Set in rural southern Maine, this episodic drama follows three farm families across the changing seasons in just over a year. Jen Shaw Jean Muir is a young woman who shoulders most of the family duties while her father Mark David Landau wrestles with the hardships of farming. Despite friction from her step-sister Margaret Emily Lowry and step-mother Cora Clara Blandick, who dream of city life, Jen seems largely content with her lot. In contrast, Mill, the wife of Jen’s unambitious uncle George Arthur Hohl, grows increasingly embittered by her unhappy marriage.
In winter, a Polish immigrant family, the Jankowskis, move onto a nearby farm and set up in the barn. Stan Donald Woods, the eldest son, has given up a bright future as a musician to live in the country. He and Jen feel a pull toward each other, but she is reluctant to open her life to romance and rejects his proposal.
After a fire destroys Stan’s barn, he returns to the city to work as a musician and agrees to take Doris Dorothy Appleby with him. Jen remains devoted to caring for her family, even as loneliness grows. In the end, Stan returns, and the couple share a true, if earned, embrace.
