During a devastating famine, fisherman Colmán Sharkey shelters a mysterious stranger named Patsy at the urging of a local priest. Patsy, a former soldier, arrives just before a devastating crop disease, known as ‘the blight,’ threatens the community. This blight mirrors the conditions of the Great Plague, which previously ravaged Ireland, causing widespread death and displacement. Survival becomes the ultimate priority as the community faces a desperate struggle against starvation and despair.

Colmán Sharkey, Dónall Ó Héalai lives with his wife and infant son on the windswept Atlantic coast, where a hard-won routine keeps them fed. He shares the work with his brother Seán, Eoin O’Dubhghaill, and the family farm’s potatoes, a fragile lifeline in a place where hunger shadows every day. To help shoulder the burden, he takes on Patsy Kelly, Dara Devaney as a farmhand and fisherman, a man who has recently left the Royal Navy under suspicious circumstances, bringing with him a wary resolve and a stubborn streak that unsettles the close-knit community. A looming crisis creeps nearer as a devastating potato blight spreads from the Midlands to the western coast, a grim prelude to widespread famine that tests everyone’s limits.
As hunger tightens its grip, the local landlord grows ever more demanding, upping rents in a time when food itself is scarce. Two armed men are sent to collect, and in a tense pause Patsy disarms one of them, only to be pressured by Colmán to relinquish the gun so that he can press for a meeting with the landlord, hoping for mercy or at least a temporary reprieve. At the landlord’s estate, Colmán tries to persuade him not to press rents higher in the face of the famine, but the meeting ends with little hope. Patsy wanders off and encounters the landlord’s daughter and the two collectors, and in a brutal spree he murders all three before disappearing into the shadows. Colmán, arriving to a scene of incomprehensible violence, is stunned by what he finds and realises a frightened young girl has witnessed the carnage. Kitty, Saise Quinn, stands as a haunting witness to the horror, a witness that Patsy later uses to bait Colmán into deeper danger. Patsy kills the landlord in a fit of rage, and a brutal confrontation between the Sharkey brothers follows, in which Seán is fatally stabbed. Enraged and grief-stricken, Colmán delivers a savage beating to Patsy and leaves him for dead, the weight of the moment pressing down on him as the sea winds howl outside.
Two years pass, and Colmán endures a brutal toll: his wife and infant son die from the famine’s relentless grip. He retreats to a cave by the shore, haunted by visions of what he has lost, attempting suicide by drowning only to be forced back to the surface by something deeper than despair. It is there, in the ruins of what used to be his cottage, that he discovers a sick young girl—Kitty—who has fallen into his life as a fragile, frightened survivor. He nurses her back to health, and in the process recognizes her as the girl who witnessed Patsy’s earlier murders. The locals, desperate for Colmán’s catch, lash out and stab him at the cottage, but he recovers and teaches Kitty essential skills: how to row, how to fish, and how to tend wounds. Over time their bond deepens in quiet, stubborn defiance of the surrounding hunger, and Kitty begins to dream of a future beyond the shorelines she knows.
As winter looms, Kitty longs to help the starving people she meets beyond their small world, but Colmán reminds her that their survival depends on the sea’s bounty and that they cannot fish without access to the water. She grows attached to a local girl and her mother, and Colmán quietly persuades them to adopt Kitty and bring her to the mainland, a plan rooted in protection and the hope of a decent life. The balance of the tale tilts again when Patsy, having somehow survived Colmán’s blow, frames Colmán for the landlord’s murder and races toward the cottage with a British agent and a police constable in tow. Kitty is seized, and the agent’s grip tightens as he beats Colmán into submission. Yet when the distraction of Kitty’s cries gives Colmán an opening, he fights back with a ferocity born of loss and love: he kills the agent and overpowers the constable, taking his gun.
In the final, brutal confrontation, Patsy threatens to harm Kitty. Kitty, drawing on the strength Colmán has fostered in her, uses a knife he once gave her to stab him in the leg, a moment that allows Colmán to seize the upper hand and strangle Patsy to death. Kitty is overwhelmed by flashbacks of the earlier murders she witnessed, while Colmán holds her close, the two of them sharing a hard-won moment of relief and a fragile, hopeful embrace as the sea sighs around them.
