Set in the early 18th century, the story unfolds in Venice at the Ospedale della Pietà, the city’s largest orphanage, where the most gifted girls are trained in music. The Pietà’s string consort—one of the world’s most renowned ensembles—performs behind a grille for wealthy donors, yet these concerts struggle to compete with the rising crowds drawn to the rival institution, the Incurabili. In response, the Pietà’s governor decides to bring back Antonio Vivaldi as the music teacher, conductor, and composer, hoping his leadership will rekindle prestige and audience.

Among the orphans, Cecilia stands out as an extraordinary 20-year-old violinist who has spent her life at the Pietà. During a high-stakes audition for first violin, the group performs Vivaldi’s La Follia variations; although Cecilia’s rival Laura fights to stay in the last woman’s seat, it is Cecilia who earns the spot. Her skill and presence captivate Frederick IV of Denmark when he attends a premiere of a sonata Vivaldi has composed for him in a single day, marking a moment of personal and institutional triumph.

But the return of Sanfermo, a veteran of the Siege of Corfu, after the end of the Ottoman–Venetian War complicates Cecilia’s life. Sanfermo’s marriage to Cecilia has been arranged by the Pietà’s governor in exchange for a substantial donation to the institution, a deal that would force Cecilia to abandon her music. To derail this plan, Cecilia becomes entangled with Michele, the greengrocer who supplies the Pietà, in a bid to demonstrate that she retains agency over her future. The ruse succeeds in making Cecilia fail a virginity test, yet the marriage is ultimately called off and she is confined to solitary confinement until Vivaldi intercedes and demands her release. To further quiet rumors, another Pietà resident is married to Sanfermo, in an effort to protect the donor’s funds and the composer’s reputation.

Cecilia’s fate takes another dark turn when Sanfermo, convinced of affront to his honor, probes for a way to ruin her. He eventually injures her wrist and left hand during a confrontation, aiming to prevent her from performing in the premiere of Juditha triumphans, a commission from Vivaldi tied to the war’s end. The governor, for his part, deceives Vivaldi by claiming that Cecilia was injured in a fall down the stairs, a claim the composer suspects but cannot muster the courage to challenge.

Despite this punishment, Cecilia is permitted to listen to the premiere from a side gallery. As she experiences the opening movements, she quietly makes her escape from the Pietà with the aid of the prioress, who herself was cast away as a baby and raised within these walls. Vivaldi intuits Cecilia’s disappearance even as the audience—Doge, the Council of Ten, Sanfermo, and countless others—applaud the conductor for his achievement. Cecilia flees by boat from Venice, releasing the token her mother had left with her in case she should someday return to claim what she had lost. The act closes with a quiet smile, signaling her release from the obsession of discovering her birth mother and the beginning of a new, self-determined path.
