Angrej, an older adult from India, returns to his pre-partition home in Pakistan and settles into the lives of the people who live there, while gently sharing memories of his life in pre-partitioned India with the visitors who listen.
In 1945, a young farmer Angrej and his friend Aslam visit a mela in a nearby village, where fate and affection intertwine. It is there he meets Maado Maado, a woman who sparks a quiet, growing bond between them. Angrej proposes marriage, but both families are wary of a love match that unsettles established expectations. He confides in his mother about the plan, only to face a stubborn stance from her, while his sister-in-law offers to arrange something—an option that hints at family influence and the limits love must navigate. This moment sets the stage for a slow, tender struggle between desire and social acceptance.
As Angrej works to win Maado, her father catches him in a moment of declaration. Before any decisive action can follow, a snake bite leaves Maado’s father unable to speak, a development that ripples through every subsequent choice. Haakam, a wealthy Lahore landlord and a distant relative of Maado’s grandmother, begins to appear at Maado’s home and flirts openly, introducing a rival pull on Maado’s affections. Angrej, devoted to Maado, sells his buffalo to buy a gold bangle for her, yet she tells him that her family would disapprove due to his financial standing. Haakam showers Maado with gifts and, with a sense of danger and allure, haunts her days. Angrej’s suspicions are sharpened when he observes a private meeting with Haakam, who even brings a radio from Lahore, signaling a widening gap between love and material allure.
The social world expands as Angrej’s cousin’s wedding brings Dhann Kaur into the fold—a friend of the family and the daughter of a wealthy aristocrat. The two men and women share days of conversation and mutual interest, and Dhann Kaur becomes a pillar of support for Angrej, helping him reconnect with Maado while also developing her own complicated feelings for him. Haakam arrives at the wedding with the groom’s baraat, and his presence and flirtations threaten to derail the fragile balance. Angrej challenges him, a confrontation that finds some restraint when Maado’s father intervenes. Haakam’s persistence continues, but Maado grows wary of his influence, and Angrej consoles her, rekindling the romance they shared. By the time the wedding concludes and guests depart, Dhann Kaur herself finds herself drawn to Angrej, even as she remains part of the larger social web.
With a new outward look and the manner of a landlord, Angrej visits Maado again and she is struck by the change. She proposes marriage, yet Angrej confronts a truth: his heart now belongs to Dhann Kaur, a girl who loves him in return. He gifts Maado the bangle and takes his leave, traveling to Dhann Kaur’s village only to discover that she has become engaged to someone else. He leaves heartbroken, a moment that crystallizes the real choices before him.
A few days later, Aslam brings news that Dhann Kaur’s fiancé is Haakam. Angrej pleads his case to Dhann Kaur’s father, who is initially enraged and even threatens violence. But Maado’s father, who has regained his voice, steps in to defend Angrej, helping to sway the elder’s opinion and ultimately convincing him to allow the union. The story thus resolves in a hopeful turn, with Angrej and Dhann Kaur moving toward a life together.
In the present day, Angrej completes the circle of memory by scattering Dhann Kaur’s ashes in the open fields around their old home, honoring her last wishes and preserving the connection they shared across time.
