Long John, Juicer, and Monk are members of a rough motorcycle gang known as The Angels. When one of their drug deals falls through, another gang, The Dragons, invites them to the ghost town of Lost Cause, where a small group of hippies has set up a commune. General, the Dragon’s leader, dogs Long John in a high-stakes race and ends up on the losing side. This loss doesn’t just sting his pride; it sets off a cascade of personal tensions that pull Long John into the orbit of a free-spirited hippie named Astrid. Astrid quickly makes an impression on him, and she makes it clear that their leaders, Vicki and Henry, are not pleased with how the Dragons are handling things.
That night, the mood in Lost Cause shifts from laid-back to brutal as several in the Dragon camp drunkenly attempt to gang-rape Astrid. The Angels intervene, but the violence leaves Astrid dead after being stabbed by one of the Dragons. The aftermath seeps through the town: the Dragons blame Long John, arguing that he intended harm against General, while the Angels feel betrayed and hunted. The tension snaps into a full-blown threat as the next day the Dragons restrain and try to kill the Angels, while Long John and his crew fight to survive in a landscape that favors desert heat and dwindling options.
As the confrontation escalates, Monk finds himself separated from the others and eventually escapes in a desperate sequence: he is chased across scorched sands by a hostile rider in a dune buggy, runs out of fuel, and makes off with a camper to keep moving. Back at Lost Cause, the hippies decide to take matters into their own hands by drugging the Dragons’ food, opening a way for Long John and Juicer to slip away. Monk, meanwhile, makes his way toward Cloud, a drug dealer who was supposed to be their initial contact at the start of the film, and the Angels converge back toward Lost Cause from the paths they’ve chosen.
When rescue finally seems possible, Monk leads the way back to the drug den where Cloud resides. The remaining Angels regroup there and begin to work out a plan to reclaim their freedom. By dawn, the fragile alliance between bikers and hippies hinges on a tense stand-off: General ties Vicki to a pole and threatens to burn her alive if the hippies won’t surrender Long John and Juicer. In a moment of heated, chaotic instinct, Henry reaches for a knife in the fray, but General wrests it away. The knife turns out to belong to Axe, a fellow Dragon, and the truth emerges: Axe had attempted to murder General during the earlier assault on Astrid. In a swift turn of judgment, General kills Axe, acknowledging the treachery that disrupted Lost Cause and intensified the conflict.
With the truth exposed and loyalties clarified, The Angels press into town and wipe out the remaining Dragons, freeing Long John and Juicer from their peril. In the wake of the massacre and the dramatic recovery of their friends, the motorcycle crew and the hippie commune alike choose to go their separate ways, each group carrying the lessons of Lost Cause into whatever roads lie ahead. The town’s ghostly stillness returns as the sun rises, and the survivors depart into a landscape that will keep their stories alive in very different directions.
