Among Grey Stones 1983

A judge, Stanislav Govorukhin in the main role, becomes despondent and neglectful of his children after his wife’s death, trapped in a cycle of painful memories and irritation with the world around him. His ten-year-old son Vasya, feeling isolated and stifled at home, longs for an escape and a glimmer of something kinder beyond the walls that confine him.

He finds both in the company of two children, Valek and Marusya, who live with a destitute beggar in the ruins of an abandoned, overgrown church near a cemetery. Vasya discovers a hard-won sense of freedom and companionship here, and at times he even tastes moments of genuine happiness amidst the rubble of their makeshift world.
